At the height of the December rush, something shifts.

The city's buildings rise into a familiar silhouette: their glowing windows the ornaments, the darting pedestrians the garland, the headlights and taillights the scattered stars. New York hasn't stopped moving, but somehow, it has become a Christmas tree.

Pierre-Emmanuel Lyet created this cover for The New Yorker's December 15, 2025 issue, using his signature graphic, flat-color illustration style to find the festive in the everyday. In his own words: "During the evening rush, the traffic becomes scattered lights; the people crossing become garlands. It's the strange magic of the season: everyone rushing somewhere, swept up in a festive frenzy that's as exhilarating as it is dizzying."

It's a perfect gift for New Yorker fans, holiday puzzle enthusiasts, and anyone who loves New York City most when it's lit up for the season.

ABOUT NEW YORK PUZZLE COMPANY: Founded in 2007 by two college pals, New York Puzzle Company started with a simple idea of making a puzzle of the iconic NYC subway map. With only six puzzle designs in our line, we decided to make the plunge to exhibit at the NY Toy Fair and see what people thought of our designs.
