As a potter inspired by Modernist traditions, I strive to express the formal qualities of ceramic vessels through a visual language of simplicity. The technical processes I am using are to reflect these esthetics. Made from porcelain, the vessels are formed through coiling, throwing and hand building with slabs. Working within the palette of a few terra sigillatas and glazes, the surface of each piece rarely exceeds the juxtaposition of two colors. This deliberately limited parameter allows for considerable variation, yet maintains aesthetic restraint. An element of decoration consists within the repetition of geometric and linear qualities. Proportions of form and surface mirror the interaction of texture and color. Conceptually I am interested in the space ceramic vessels contain, that is the interior space as well as the two dimensional space of the surface. Perceiving the ceramic vessel beyond a consideration for function, I intend to extend the notion of utilitarian containment to that of sculptural presence in which the vessel becomes a container for memory and contemplation.
