Contemplation, and the expression of such, accompanies the everyday tea.
- 2013 Yunomi Invitational Statement
Twenty-three years ago, our family invested in x-country skis, and a plan which offered our son an up-grade every year, in size, for $10 a year, until he reached adulthood. We took lessons, skied in the metro parks, and around the house. Over the years, I inherited everyone else’s cast-offs, since I was the only one still skiing. It has been good cold weather exercise, and has helped me to love the winter even more, and it gives me the time to think, and put answers to problems----one of which was: how to marry maiolica with the yunomi aesthetic.
We live on what was once an old lakebed. Every snowy day I would put on my skis and tramp out over the crusty driveway, and shove off down the cornfield, letting the flatness, and the patterns of corn stubble, and the trail of the skis calm me. Every day I’d note the changing patterns of light and shadow on the snow, the sparseness of color and the cleanness of form, the coolness of air breathed in. Flat land, white snow, grey sky, brown corn stubble. Horizon. Everyday. Yunomi. Maiolica.
