My work investigates how individual perceptions are formed. I am fascinated in the affect of environment, traditions and superstitions on our perspective of culture. I like to question and challenge preconceptions that can reshape our sense of identity.
The pieces I create appropriate elements of form, decoration, color, image and material that are distinct in culture of history. The viewer is left to construct the context and narrative of the object or image based on his or her own perspective and experience. I strive to create work that has the ability to transgress boundaries of all types - geographic, cultural, contextual and visual.
BIOGRAPHY
Steven Young Lee is currently the Resident Artist Director at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, MT. He received his MFA in Ceramics from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. In 2004-2005 he lectured and taught at numerous universities throughout China. While there, he created a new body of work as part of a one-year cultural and educational exchange fellowship in Jingdezhen, Jianxi Province.
He has taught at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver, B.C., Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michiga, the Clay Art Center in New York, and Lill Street Studio in Chicago.
